GHS wrestling team finishes undefeated in T-CAL with 52-19 road
win over Palma.
SALINAS – The Gilroy High wrestling team completed its undefeated dual meet run through the Tri-County Athletic League with Wednesday’s 52-19 thrashing of host Palma.
The Mustang matmen (5-0 in T-CAL) shift their focus to the Feb. 15 T-CAL Championships at San Benito High in Hollister starting at 10 a.m.
In Wednesday’s dual meet win, head coach Armondo Gonzalez once again bumped almost everyone up a weight class.
Opening the night at heavyweight, junior Jose Albarron dropped a tight 10-8 decision in a thrilling bout – but the Mustangs then ran off eight straight victories to secure a comfortable lead.
At 103s, freshman Taylor Harrington registered his second pinfall in only his second varsity match to give Gilroy the lead for good. At 112s, junior John Gurich received a forfeit and, at 119s, freshman Adin Duenas won a 10-0 decision.
Up next, freshman Armondo Gonzalez notched a 16-1 technical fall at 125s; senior Danny San Juan registered a pin at 130s; junior Chad Haygood recorded a 15-1 major decision at 135s; senior Gilbert Gutierrez tallied a 15-0 shutout at 140s; and senior Andrew Rauss earned a 9-1 victory.
The Gilroy run ended at 152s as senior Martin Serrano was pinned and then 160-pounder Miguel Maldonado dropped an 11-0 decision.
Gilroy’s Victor Sanchez received a forfeit win at 171s; senior Mark Zabala pinned his opponent at 189s; and senior Ryan Reynaud lost by pin.
