DEAR EDITOR:

As a South County resident and transit rider, I agree that the VTA is totally out of control. Look at the lopsided decisions and out-of –whack design of our transit system first. The nearly derailed light rail system, which is the least efficient and has the lowest ridership in the nation, is going nowhere. It only serves San Jose residents, which we South County folk get to pay for … good deal. And now VTA wants BART.

The VTA admits it has no money to build or operate BART, what does South County get from that pork-barrel pipe dream? The VTA management and the transit board, headed by San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales and his ambitions of one-upping Rod Diridon, need to go.

They only want to serve small-time politician’s ambitions and forget about you, the riding public.

The VTA management is willing to sacrifice the only cost-effective mode of transit service left, buses. The bus is all we have in South County, and the service is minimal. Right now, the VTA is maintaining a fleet of buses that sit in a parking lot and leak fuel and coolant. The reserve fleet, as it is called, is the result of the terrible management decisions by cutting bus service that is desperately needed, keeping rail service that nobody rides, and keeping layer upon layer of middle and lower management and support positions.

The maintenance facility at Highway 237 and Zanker Road in San Jose is being nearly doubled in size only to cut more service and lay off more of the people that actually serve the public – it’s unbelievable!

It is truly a three-ring circus at the VTA. I agree the VTA management and board need to be replaced immediately. They are both trying to cover up their inept practices and agenda and hang you with another bill to pay, like Enron.

I hope this commentary will open the eyes of the public and cause some investigative work by anyone interested. It would be so nice to see a group of transit officials actually focused in providing quality public transportation for all of us, not just San Jose residents. It would be the right thing to do, and it needs to done now.
