NJB Sting finish regular season with 10 wins, no losses

The Gilroy Sting National Junior Basketball team finished regular season play with a surprising 10-0 record.

The first year team, made up of 5 and 6 grade girls group from five different Gilroy schools, came together as a team under coaches Ed Sauceda, Bruce Mah, and Stephanie Wheat.

The Sting was led offensively by Michelle Sosa and Lauren Rhodes, who each scored more than 70 points in the season. Kaylana Mah, Megan Wheat, and Sara Sauceda each scored more than 40 points during the season. Sarina Sandoval, Chelsea Hill, Ashley Lambert, Chelsea Girvin, and Ebony Stevens provided much needed defense with many rebounds and steals.

The team practiced two nights a week and scrimmaged both boys and girls teams to improve their skills.

The Sting played Silicon Valley Division teams in established chapters such as Palo Alto and Coyote Creek. They averaged 41 points per game while only giving up 15 to opponents. Only three teams scored more than 20 points against them.

The Sting has a good chance of qualifying for the National NJB tournament in April. NJB has chapters across the US. The 2004-2005 season is the second year for the Gilroy-Morgan Hill chapter.

The Ghost off to training camp

Undefeated boxing sensation and NABF Featherweight Champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (14-0-1) is off to camp to train for his scheduled fight April 1, 2005 on Shobox.

The venue and opponent have not been scheduled.

The Ghost is coming off an impressive KO victory against Cesar Figueroa (28-5-2) to capture the NABF Featherweight title. Ranked number 6 in the WBC and top ten in all other organizations, Guerrero feels he has what it takes to be a world champion.

“I’m ready to fight anybody they put in front of me. With John Bray teaching me the sweet science of the sport, I’ll be able to compete with the best featherweights in the world. Were going to take it to the next level this camp,” Guerrero said.
