Open house on SR 152/156

HOLLISTER – Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority and the California Department of Transportation will hold a public open house/scoping meeting for the environmental impact report for the proposed state route 152/156 project in south Santa Clara County.

The proposed project would provide safety and operational improvements through the following:

• widen portions of SR 152 and SR 156 from two lanes to four lanes within the project limits,

• construct a single-lane, grade-separated ramp for vehicles traveling eastbound on SR 152 through the project area,

• construct a single-lane, at-grade diagonal ramp for vehicles traveling westbound on SR 152 through project area,

• construct a single-lane, at-grade connector for vehicles traveling eastbound on SR 152 to westbound SR 156.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide the public with information about the project and receive comments on the environmental impact and mitigation measures that should be discussed in the Environmental Document.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Casa de Fruta, Gate 5, Pacheco Hall, 10031 Pacheco Pass Highway, Hollister.

The deadline for receiving comments is Oct. 20. Comments can be sent by mail to VTA Environmental Planning, 3331 North First St., Building B, San Jose, CA 95134-1927.

Scarecrow show-off contest

GILROY– Bonfante Gardens is looking for scarecrows to help decorate the park during the month of October. So it’s holding a contest and giving away 50 complimentary day passes to Bonfante Gardens to any group who enters. In order to enter you must:

• get your group together – class, business, nonprofit organization, boy scout troop, brownie troop, day care centers, churches and clubs,

• create your full-size scarecrow to be displayed at Bonfante Gardens,

• contact Lizz Hunter at li*********@*************ns.com to let her know your organization’s name and arrange a time to bring her your scarecrow and receive your complimentary passes,

• be prepared to advise her on what you would like the sign to say that will be displayed with your scarecrow.

Deadline for entries is Thursday, Oct. 2.

Bless your pet

GILROY – St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 651 Broadway, will have a Blessing of the Animals Service on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m., in the Church Courtyard. This is the day of celebration of the ministry of St. Franci of Assisi. All members of the community are invited to come and bring their pets. Round up funds for high hchool Rodeo

GILROY – Chevy’s, 8440 Murray Ave., is hosting a fund raiser for the California High School Rodeo Association on Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Simply give your server your receipt, inform them of your intent to support the fund raiser and Chevy’s will donate 20 percent of the proceeds to the CHSRA.

All high school students attending public, private or home school in California are eligible to participate in the CHSRA. Representatives from the CHSRA will be available in the evening to answer any questions on how to become involved in sport. Details or reservations: Chevy’s at 847-2726.

Apply for Rotary grants

GILROY – The Rotary Club of Gilroy is currently accepting applications for community grants. The Club has allocated approximately $20,000 to grant to local community agencies this year.

Grant applicants should:

• emphasize education and/or youth, with local focus in Gilroy,

• be an organization, not a person,

• have a broad-based impact, and a specific use for the money needs to be designated.

The Rotary Club of Gilroy has distributed more than $110,000 in community grants over the past six years. Applications can be obtained from the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, 7471 Monterey Road, or by calling Scott van Keulen at 842-5272 or Jay Baksa at 846-0202. An e-form is available. All applications must be postmarked by Oct. 31 and mailed to Rotary Club of Gilroy, Special Grants, PO Box 1912, Gilroy, CA 95021-1912.
