The local programming is starting to roll in, and while our schedules aren’t quite ready to publish yet, keep surfing and check out these new programs coming your way next week. Gilroy celebrated its best on Feb. 7 at the Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet, and CMAP had the pleasure of covering it.
Mayor Tom Springer kicked off the event with the “Ron and Ron Show,” featuring Co-Educators of the Year Ron Ayala and Ron Kinoshita. While the two made humble acceptance speeches, it was obvious that after a combined 64 years of teaching, the duo have made quite an impression on Gilroy’s youth over the years. Mr. Kinoshita, you don’t need a tux to be a first class and most worthy recipient!
Scott Lynch presented the Man of the Year Award on behalf of Gilroy’s Chamber to Jay Baksa. While Jay would like to credit Tom Springer for the “horn section” salute, I’d say it has more to do with the enthusiasm and admiration that Jay evokes in this community. While listening to his acceptance speech, I was reminded of an article I read about being happy. The article notes that a key element in a “happy” person’s life is doing what you love for a living. I enjoyed hearing Jay mention that he was just doing what he loved, and to earn an award for that was very validating of the choices he’d made over the years. Hear hear.
Woman of the Year Award Jodi Heinzen and Volunteer of the Year Greg Edgar are then shown accepting their awards. Love the Doo Doo Derby story… what a trooper. Finally, the Small Business of the Year recipient Baskets by Design and Large Business of the Year, Calpine, accept their kudos. Many thanks to cameraman A.J. Junker and editor W. Clay for the fine coverage, and many thanks to Susan Valenta and the Chamber for making the production possible.
If you want to relive the moment, catch the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet on Channel 20 Sunday, March 30 at 9 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday April 1 and 4 at 8 p.m., and Saturday, April 5 at 5 p.m.
Now, onto another landmark telecast. I do believe that on Monday, March 31 at 1 p.m., San Juan Bautista will see one of their city council meetings on the air for the first time. Taped on Tuesday the 18th, this City Council marathon meeting will be aired from 1 to 5 p.m. every day next week on Channel 17 in Hollister and San Juan Bautista, starting Monday. I’m thrilled that all three of the communities we cablecast in have their council meetings on board. We’ve got the communication tool … let’s use it!
Speaking of … I’d like to take this opportunity to remind folks that it’s free to get your event, meeting, parade, etc. onto one of the access channels. If you’ve got a VHS camera at home, you can do it yourself! Or, you can borrow CMAP’s equipment to videotape an event for airing. I find myself having to remind people that CMAP is not like a “news” station.
We don’t have the staff to do the producing. Our mission is to encourage and train the community members to do it themselves. Think of us as a “self-service” TV station. Get trained, get equipment, get on the air. Afterall, it’s YOUR voice we want to hear. Interested? Come to a free Orientation on Saturday, April 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at CMAP.
