Recently, I sat down with Gilroy High School teacher Mr. Darren Yafai to ask him what attributes he feels are necessary for student success. A 14-year veteran, he has taught World History, Government, Global Studies and U.S. History.
Carly Kennedy: What characteristics do you value most in a student?
Darren Yafai: I value self-motivation and enthusiasm. When a student comes into my classroom with a smile on his or her face, it makes my job a lot easier and a lot more fun. I also value work ethic. If you work hard towards your own goals, you earn my respect.
CK: If you could change one thing about student behavior, what would that be?
DY: I would make sure that they see opportunity, and they would not just cruise through. High school years are very important and students need to become more focused, take school seriously and make sure to have high goals so they will always know what decisions to make and do not wonder aimlessly.
CK: Would you rather have a serious, in-your-face student or a relaxed, calm student?
DY: I would rather have a serious student, definitely. Being in-your-face shows that they actually care about progress and reaching their personal goals. Like I mentioned, I admire students who have a strong work ethic and are self-motivated and enthusiastic. When a student has these characteristics, they will never lose sight of their goals.
CK: What study habits do students need in order to take advantage of learning opportunities in school?
DY: Simple habits include rereading certain pages in the book, reviewing the homework, having a family member read your work, constant participation in class, and studying with a friend. Students need to make sure they are familiar and comfortable with the material.
Basically, all a student needs is an open mind, determination towards his/her own goals, and a clear and focused mind.
