GILROY – After burglarizing City Hall’s Community Services Department over the weekend, one or more thieves may have used stolen radios to broadcast obscene language over city channels, Gilroy police say.
Community Services staff reported the theft to police at 8:08 a.m. Monday. Missing were two radios valued at $1,000 from Recreation Supervisor Sandra Sammut’s office, a digital camera worth $400 from Recreation Supervisor Judy Janisch’s office, a handheld computer worth $400 from Public Information Officer Joe Kline’s office and two portable CD players worth $165 from non-designated areas used by other staff members.
On Saturday, an unauthorized person or people used foul language over a city of Gilroy radio frequency, police reported.
Police recovered fingerprints from a speaker found on the floor in City Hall, taken from the desk where one of the CD players was. The prints could be from city staff or from a burglar, police said. Match results from the San Jose police laboratory are expected in two to four weeks.
There were no signs of forced entry to City Hall doors or windows, according to police.
Kline said two sets of locked front doors protect the north wing of City Hall, where the Community Services Department is. Staff members typically don’t lock their office doors so cleaning staff can access them over the weekend, he said.
The last time Kline remembered seeing his handheld computer was Friday afternoon. He said he was working in his office for about four hours on Sunday but didn’t remember if it was there or not, since he wasn’t using it. He noticed it missing Monday morning.
