GILROY – Today will be the community’s last chance to join Gilroy Unified School District in its annual “Love of Literacy Week” celebration. Everyone is asked to join in for DEAR time – Drop Everything and Read.

At precisely 2 p.m. today, every student attending Gilroy’s public schools will stop what they’re doing, pick up a book, and read until the end of the school day. That will be about 20 minutes of reading for elementary students, 15 minutes for middle-schoolers and 50 minutes for high school students.

Every Gilroy resident is encouraged to bring a book to work or simply pull one off the shelf at 2 p.m. and participate.

Today concludes the district’s second-annual “Love of Literacy Week,” when the entire Gilroy community partners with local schools to focus on reading and writing.
