Algie James “Jimmy” Spencer Jr., who operated Spencer Cleaners on Monterey Street in Gilroy for many years, died Sunday, Nov. 2, at Royale Gardens Health & Rehabilitation Center in Grants Pass, Ore. He was 80.

Mr. Spencer was born Oct. 17, 1923 in Paducah, Kent. His family moved to Gilroy and Mr. Spencer graduated from Gilroy High School in 1943. He served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he took over the cleaning business operated by his father.

After his retirement, he worked as a security guard at the Villages retirement community in San Jose. He moved to Kerby, Ore., six years ago. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed rock collecting.

He is survived by his son, Frank Spencer, of Kerby. He was preceded in death by his sons, Algie James Spencer III and Russell Spencer.

There were no services. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors, 612 Northwest A St., Grants Pass, Ore. 97528, were in charge of arrangements.
