Get ‘the look’

GILROY – Gavilan College Cosmetology Department invites you to their annual scholarship fund raiser and Dinner Dance tonight, at the Elks Lodge, 2765 Hecker Pass Road. Guests will be treated to a show of 50 to 80 different “looks,” with hairstyles created by the students of the Gavilan College Cosmetology program on live models.

There will be a no-host cocktail bar opening at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Following the hairstyle show will be D.J. music for dancing. This fund raiser will provide three scholarships for cosmetology students: one for a first-year student, a second-year student and a third-year student. Scholarships will be presented by the Gilroy Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Macy’s, and the Gavilan College Associated Student Body. Sponsors include Wal-Mart, Keith B. Higgins and Associates, Inc., and Diana’s Haircrafters. Tickets are $35 per person. Details: 848-4884.

Mythology for kids

GILROY – The Gavilan College Children’s Repertory Theater presents their production of “Palace of the Minotaur” today and Saturday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m., at the Gavilan College Theater, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. The play recounts the Greek myth of Theseus and Ariadne; a story of a labyrinth, a minotaur, and a hero named Theseus who saves the day. Especially written for kids, this play is great for the whole family. Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and students and $6 for kids under 12. Booster breakfast

GILROY – The Gilroy FFA Boosters will host a pancake breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Grange Hall, 8191 Swantson Lane. Only $5 per person; tickets available at the door.

Benefit for Read-a-Thon

GILROY – A Benefit for the St. Mary School’s Read-a-Thon Classroom Sponsorship Fund will be held on Sunday, Nov. 16, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at The Strand Theater.

There will be a variety of vendors, including Pampered Chef, Scrapbook Buzz, PartyLite Candles, Bella Biscotti and By Invitation Only (All Occasion Invitations and Announcements). People will also have the opportunity to pre-order holiday poinsettias and See’s Candy (benefiting SMS Mothers Guild). GALS Gilroy commemorative throws will also be available. Details: 206-3826.

Join the write party

GILROY – Interested in writing? Missing the camaraderie of a local writers’ group? Take heart. The Gilroy Public Library, 7387 Rosanna St., is hosting “A Writing Party,” on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 1 to 2 p.m., at their location. Little players wanted

Gilroy – The Gilroy Little League has scheduled three sign-up dates for the 2004 season: Saturdays, Nov. 15 and 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 5 to 9 p.m. Sign-ups will be held at Las Animas Park in the recreation room.

Boys and girls from the Gilroy and Morgan Hill area must be at least 5 years old by March 1 and no older than 15 by July 31 to participate. New players must also supply a non-returnable copy of their birth certificate. Teams will be formed based on those signed up by Dec. 31, those signed-up afterward will be put on a waiting list.

Registration is: $60 for

T-ball (ages 5 to 7), $80 for Little League (ages 7 to 12) and $90 for juniors and seniors (ages 13 to 15). A late registration fee of $15 will apply to those signed up after Dec. 31. Scholarship and financial assistance is available. Details: 848-7390.

Open house at the vineyard

GILROY – Fortino Winery, 4525 Hecker Pass Highway, hosts its “Holiday Open House,” on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 1 to 5 p.m. Enjoy an afternoon of wine, food and holiday shopping. Barrel tasting, old wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, gift baskets, and a holiday boutique are just a few of the features planned. Guests are invited to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the vineyards. GILROY – The Impalas Car Club hosts its sixth annual “Toy Drive and Show-n-Shine,” on Sunday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Big O Tires, 7700 Monterey St. Raffles, food, music and live entertainment from Ruby Guzman, MC Underdog and Rednose Records, promise fun for the whole family. ‘Working’ play

GILROY – The Gilroy High School presents a production of the musical “Working. ” Performances of the play are set for Fridays and Saturdays, Nov. 14, 15, 20 and 21 at 8 p.m., as well as matinee performance on Sundays, Nov. 16 and 23 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens.

Help fill bags with kindness

GILROY – This week, sales associates for Century 21 Premier will be delivering empty grocery bags throughout neighborhoods in Gilroy and Morgan Hill. The bags will be accompanied with a tale of kindness and community spirit with a request to generously fill the bags with non-perishable items to be donated to needy families in South County. This Thanksgiving food drive, sponsored by Century 21 Premier, Stewart Title and Nob Hill Foods will benefit The Lord’s Table, a charity based in Gilroy that supports needy families throughout the year. Century 21 Premier will personally pick up the filled grocery bags on Monday, Nov. 17.

Please show your support by filling the bag you receive with non-perishable food items, and someone in need will be touched by the kindness in our community.

Celebrate Victorian style

GILROY – The Gilroy Community Services Department invites you to “A Victorian Christmas” on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., at the Historic Willey Cultural Center and 1910 Carnegie Library Building on Fifth Street. A special “Treasure Hunt” tour of the Gilroy Museum, quilting display and sale, holiday keepsake, and Victorian Tea are planned for the morning and afternoon celebrations. Claudia Salewske will be present to sign copies of her new book “Images of America.” Only $15 per person and $18 to non-residents. Children 6 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
