Tollison records second straight double-double, but GHS boys

SALINAS – The Gilroy High boys basketball team was overmatched Thursday night by an athletic North Salinas squad – faltering on the road, 72-58.
“They’re just real athletic. We can’t compete against real athletic teams,” said head coach Michael Baumgartner, whose squad’s record dips to 0-4 in T-CAL with a Tuesday home game against neighboring rival Live Oak up next. “We played them well last time. I told the kids to remember that feeling and take that to them this time.”
Senior forward Erik Tollison tallied his second straight double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while senior guard Danny Vadillo stayed hot with a team-high 12 points.
“(Tollison) gets real frustrated, but now that he’s matured he uses that frustration to really push himself. He’s matured a lot. He just doesn’t give up,” Baumgartner said. “We had a good talk the other day. I wanted him (Vadillo) to start scoring within our offense. He started to force the issue. I told him to take his opportunities within the offense.”
Since the Mustangs trailed by 10 at the end of the first quarter, 18 at the half, and 19 at the end of the third quarter, Baumgartner emptied his bench – allowing his reserves to get some action.
“Everybody got to play,” Baumgartner said. “Derrick Fellows came off the bench and did really well… He’s in there battling and pushing guys around. He had four points and four assists.”
Junior guard Ron Colmon led the second unit with his intensity on defense as well as some acrobatic finishes underneath the basket.
