Gavilan College is working toward launching men’s and women’s wrestling programs, with the goal of beginning competition in 2027. Fundraising efforts have already been put into motion by the nonprofit Gavilan College Foundation.
A statement from Gavilan College noted that wrestling has deep roots throughout the college’s South Valley service area. Local schools and clubs have built strong programs, supported by coaches, families and fans who care deeply about the sport.
Gavilan officials said the school wants to give those athletes a place to take the next step without leaving home.
The college intends to build both programs together, so women and men have the same opportunity to compete from the start. Student-athletes would be able to continue their education at Gavilan while staying connected to the families, coaches and communities that helped them grow.
“Wrestling is deeply rooted in our community, which boasts a proud tradition of state champions and local talent,” said Gavilan College Superintendent and President Dr. Pedro Avila. “Bringing wrestling to Gavilan directly answers our community’s call to keep these student-athletes local while expanding opportunities right here at home to compete as Gavilan Rams.”
The programs will rely on community support to launch the two teams, as the state does not provide startup funds for athletic teams. The Gavilan College Foundation is raising startup funds for equipment, uniforms, competition expenses and other needs to establish the programs.
“People in this community care about wrestling, and they care about giving local students more opportunities,” said Anna Quiñones, director of the Gavilan College Foundation. “Every gift helps move these teams closer to their first season.”
Planning is underway, and the college will share updates on coaching, recruiting and the first season as details are finalized.
