The San Martin Airport Food Truck Fly-In will return Oct. 17 for its sixth annual celebration, bringing aircraft, food, live entertainment and family activities to the South County airport.
The free community event is scheduled from 10am-4pm at San Martin Airport, 13030 Murphy Ave. The event is designed to give the public an opportunity to experience aviation up close, meet local pilots and aviation organizations and learn more about the airport’s role in the community.
The Fly-In will feature aircraft demonstrations and static displays, skydiving and radio-controlled aircraft demonstrations, classic and exotic cars, live music, food trucks, local vendors, a kids zone and a silent auction, says a press release from event organizers.
Tethered hot air balloon rides will begin at 7:45am, weather permitting.
“The Food Truck Fly-In is really about opening up the airport to our community,” said event co-chair Niki Britton. “You don’t have to be a pilot or know anything about aviation to come out and have a great time.”
Britton said organizers want families to be able to meet people who fly and work at the airport and learn about the airport as a community resource.
A major focus of the event is supporting students pursuing careers in aviation. Proceeds from the event and silent auction support aviation scholarships and programs for local students.
Five $3,000 scholarships will be awarded this year to local students, and recipients will be recognized during the Fly-In.
Swift Fuels, a premier sponsor of the event, is sponsoring one of the scholarships. The company plans to fly a Cirrus SR22T from Indiana to San Martin using Swift 100R unleaded aviation fuel. The aircraft will be on display during the event.
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association will host a Rusty Pilots Seminar from 9am-12:30pm for pilots interested in returning to flying after time away from the cockpit. Advance registration is required.
Admission and parking are free, and the event is open to the public. Pilots are encouraged to fly into San Martin Airport and participate in the festivities.
