Three men arrested after chase
Gilroy – Police arrested three men following a vehicle chase that started in Gilroy and ended in South San Jose early Tuesday morning.
Police tried to stop the men, driving a Honda Element that was stolen in Scotts Valley in December, in town just after 12am. The driver did not stop, instead heading north on U.S. Highway 101 until Bailey Avenue where the three men were arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, receiving stolen property, and evading a peace officer/reckless driving, all felonies; and on suspicion of providing false information to an officer, a misdemeanor.
Arrested were: Dillon Lee Huck, 24, of San Jose; Anthony Guy Mata, 19, of San Jose; and Gilbert Joseph Dewstone, 20, of Modesto.
Two suspected hit-and-run drivers arrested
Morgan Hill – Police arrested two suspected hit-and-run drivers hiding in homes after they each fled the scene of separate accidents.
The first accident occurred Saturday about 8:40pm when police received a call of an accident on Hillwood Lane, near Hale Avenue and Llagas Road in north Morgan Hill. Officers arrived at the scene to find a Toyota pickup crashed into a light pole, but no one in the vehicle. It appeared the pickup had drifted off the roadway, through a fence and struck the light pole, police said.
A search of the Toyota turned up information leading to the Christina Apartments on West Main Avenue. The owner of the Toyota told police his son, Erick Siney, 21, of Morgan Hill, had borrowed the truck and gone out with a friend.
Officers then went to another West Main Avenue address and talked to Samuel Ortiz, 45, of Morgan Hill. Though Ortiz denied knowledge of Siney’s whereabouts, he was found hiding in a back bedroom.
Siney was booked into county jail on suspicion of driving under the influence and hit-and-run. Ortiz was charged with concealing a felon.
Just six hours after the first accident, MHPD officers were dealing with another hit-and-run that occurred about 2:30am Sunday, when an abandoned vehicle was reported on Dougherty Avenue in north Morgan Hill.
Inside the vehicle officers found a fishing license with the name and address of Morgan Cisneros, 25, of Morgan Hill. When they arrived at his residence, he was extremely intoxicated, said, MHPD Lt. Joe Sampson.
Cisneros was arrested on suspicion of DUI, hit and run, vandalism and assaulting a peace officer.
Lockyer warns against instant refunds
Sacramento – Attorney General Bill Lockyer is warning California taxpayers to avoid “refund anticipation loans” from tax preparers, which are perceived as instant cash but often carry high interest rates and fees.
An estimated 12.1 million taxpayers obtained refund anticipation loans last year, and more than half were low-income taxpayers, Lockyer said.
Low- and moderate-income families can use the free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.
