GILROY
– Dr. Terrence Roberts, one of the nine African-American
students who gained national attention through the tumultuous
integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., will speak
at Gavilan College on Wednesday, Feb. 5 on the topic

Lessons from Little Rock.

He will discuss his personal experiences and the continuing
problem of racism in America. The public is invited to join Gavilan
College students for this presentation at 10 a.m. at Gavilan
College’s Gilroy campus in room SS214 or at noon in room SS214; at
5 p.m. at the Gilroy United Methodist Church for a reception; or

Donate used cell phones

GILROY – Community Solutions is holding a cell phone drive throughout Gilroy and Morgan Hill. The Shelter Alliance will give Community Solutions between 50 cents and $20 for each phone collected, which will be used to pay for clothing, shelter, food, children’s toys, diapers, and other needed supplies. In Gilroy, cell phones are being collected at Safeway at 905 First St., Cellular Universe at 1205 C First St., and Community Solutions at 6980 Chestnut Ave. Please donate phones that are less than five years old. Pencil in this class

GILROY – The City of Gilroy Adult Program introduces an exciting new art class focusing on the versatile medium of colored pencils. The class will meet on Thursday evenings, Feb. 6 through March 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. The beauty of colored pencils is that even though it is a simple medium, it is one that can be applied, blended and manipulated in a variety of ways to create beautiful and imaginative compositions of any subject matter that interests you. Dance with your sweetheart

GILROY – The Senior Center Valentine Dinner Dance will take place Saturday, Feb. 8 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St. The cost is $5 per person. Grant deadline nears

GILROY – The Gilroy Assistance League is accepting grant requests for 2003. Last year, GALS gave out over $9,000 to various local youth causes, including Brownell Academy Music Department, Gilroy Community Youth Center, GHS Grad Night, and St. Joseph’s Family Center. Grant requests should be a written letter requesting a specific amount of money and what it will be used for. Mail requests to Paula Goldsmith, 8321 Peppergrass Court., Gilroy, CA 95020. Take a garlic cruise

GILROY – The luxury ocean liner “Norweigan Sky” will become a stinking ship May 6 to 11 when the Gilroy Garlic Festival hosts a five-day pacific coastal cruise as part of its year-long 25th anniversary celebration. Garlic lovers on board will enjoy gourmet meals and cooking demonstrations by celebrity chefs, including Emile Miller of Emile’s Restaurant in San Jose. Also on board will be the cooking/comedy duo of Gene Sakahara and Sam Bozzo, both past Garlic Festival presidents and expert chefs who have become audience favorites on the Festival Cook-Off stage.

The Norweigan Cruise Lines ship will depart San Francisco on May 6 and make stops in Seattle and Victoria en route to Vancouver, British Columbia. Details: 842-5671.

MORGAN HILL – The South County Chapter of Leads Club is holding an open house on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 a.m. at Seven Oaks Properties, 16433 Monterey Road. Playhouse grand opening

MORGAN HILL – On Friday, Jan. 31, the City of Morgan Hill presents the Gala Grand Opening of the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse. The Playhouse is located on the southeast corner of Monterey Road and Fifth Street. The event will begin with a ribbon cutting, open house and music by harpist Jennifer Cass starting at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. This portion of the event is free of charge.
