Gonzalez scores lone Gilroy goal in 4-1 loss to league-foe
Salinas.
GILROY – The Gilroy High girls soccer team’s season-long struggle continued Tuesday as the Lady Mustangs fell to league-foe Salinas for the second time this year, 4-1.
“We played solid as a team,” assistant coach Matt Jacobsen said. “They hustled to the end.”
The Lady Cowboys jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a quick strike only seconds into the game, but the Gilroy kickers remained composed and kept Salinas from stretching its lead.
“As a team, we played well,” first-year head coach Adam Gemar said. “We didn’t give up.”
Halfway through the first half, Gilroy (0-5 in T-CAL) caught a break – scoring its first and only goal on a penalty shot by forward Lizzete Gonzalez.
Following their counter-strike, the Lady Mustangs picked up the pace and kept Salinas at bay – ending the first half entangled in a 1-1 tie.
In the second half, Gilroy struggled to find the back of the net – while the Lady Cowboys netted three unanswered goals.
The Lady Mustangs had a chance to score a second goal on a penalty shot – but Alysha Davis’ boot sailed over the crossbar. Gilroy could not generate much more scoring opportunities – but the players never stopped hustling on the field.
“We played strong and didn’t give up,” said fullback Tracey Link, who was named her team’s player of the game.
Gilroy will try again for its first Tri-County Athletic League victory with Thursday’s home game against Hollister at 5:30 p.m.
