– Anyone wanting a voice in how public schools spend their money
can attend a special school board workshop Thursday, Jan. 30.
Gilroy Unified School District trustees will begin the process
of establishing a budget for the 2003-04 school year. Meeting time
is 7:30 p.m. It will be held in the district office at 7810 Arroyo
Circle.
Those unable to attend are welcome to send questions, comments
or suggestions to GUSD Assistant Superintendent Lee White at

Advertise to support a local cause

GILROY – The Gilroy High School Art and Literary Guild is offering a win-win opportunity for local businesses wanting to get their name out and support a local cause at the same time.

The Guild publishes a yearly magazine – called “author! author!” – featuring the art and writing of GHS students. It needs financial help in producing the multi-section glossy.

Donations of any amount are appreciated and ad space will be given for any donation over $25. Standard advertisements are business-card size.

‘American Ideal’ opens

GILROY – John Bisceglie’s newest musical, “American Ideal,” opens production on Friday, Jan. 24 at Old City Hall in Gil-roy. Be a Star

GILROY – STAR TV, an after-school performers workshop, is seeking participants for Spring 2003. All talented young actors, singers and dancers, ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in STAR TV. Julianne Palma will produce and direct this brand-new, exciting and dynamic kids TV show. The best of the best will be seen on Cable Channel 18. The fee for this class is $225. Mission run turns 20

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – After enduring the San Juan Bautista charity run for the past two decades, its participants still aren’t tired of it.

On Feb. 1, the San Juan Mission 10-mile and 5-kilometer Run will celebrate its 20th anniversary over the course’s historic and scenic setting.

The 10-mile portion of the event starts at 10 a.m. and ends at the Mission San Juan Bautista. The 5k is scheduled to start at 10:15 a.m.

The deadline for pre-registration is Jan. 27, but race-day sign-ups will be allowed. To register online, go to www.active.com or www.theschedule.com. The fee is $20 for pre-registered runners and $25 for those who register on race day.

All proceeds from the event go to the Hollister Rotary Club, which will re-distribute the money into area scholarship funds. Prizes will also be awarded by age group and gender. For more information call Bill Tiffany at 637-0071.

Healing our World

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – Reyna’s Gallery in San Juan Bautista will sponsor a three-day conference titled “Healing Our World” Jan. 24 to 26. The conference will explore the healing of humanity, empowering women and balancing power between men and women. A number of speakers will make presentations and hold workshops that will teach basic techniques to communicate with animals, plants, the landscape and the earth.

“We have a lot of speakers coming in,” said Ramone Chico of Reyna’s Gallery. “We’re looking to have about 300 people in attendance.”

A book-signing will be held at the gallery Friday, Jan. 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. Among those in attendance will be Dr. Louis Turi, author of “The Power of the Dragon,” who will give his views on Nostradamus astrology. On Saturday, Jan. 25 the day conference will begin at 10 a.m. with an opening ceremony at the San Juan Bautista Community Center off of Second Street. Speakers and a discussion panel for men and women on how to reconnect with the earth and what men and women can do to improve their world are included in the day’s events, which go until 6 p.m. A variety of workshops will be held Sunday, Jan. 26 at the community center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is by tuition for each workshop. Participate in county summit of chambers

SANTA CLARA – The Santa Clara County Chambers of Commerce Coalition (SCCCCC), which represents 16 chambers of commerce and thousands of businesses in the county, will host its first joint Legislative Summit on Friday, Jan. 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara. The Summit will provide the opportunity for regional chambers to express their top business issues and to hear from attending elected officials about the legislative outlook for 2003.

The purpose of this event is to foster a better understanding about the needs of Santa Clara County businesses and to promote a strong economic recovery as a solution to the current state budget crisis.
