GILROY – On the final day for candidacy filings, two more Gilroyans have entered the City Council race.

Dion Bracco, who after pulling papers decided not to run, has changed his mind once again. Bracco will run for City Council after all.

“I got quite a few phone calls after the paper came out last night,” Bracco said. “After talking with (my supporters) they convinced me I was qualified to run and that I should run.”

On Friday, Raymond Morasca also pulled papers for the City Council race. He was not available for comment before deadline.

The City Council race stands as follows: Incumbent Peter Arellano, Incumbent Roland Velasco, Planning Commission Chairman Russ Valiquette, Planning Commissioner Paul Correa, Bracco and Morasca. For the mayoral race “Lupe” Arellano, Al Pinheiro, Ellyn Atkins and Mary Hohenbrink will face off.

Reserve a booth for ‘It’s showtime’

GILROY – The South Valley Business Showcase will debut on Wednesday, Sept. 10, from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Historic Strand Theater, 7588 Monterey St. “It’s Showtime” will feature the latest in products and services to thousands of potential customers under one roof. A “mixer” will also feature samplings of local restaurants and wineries. All booths cost $350, $500 for non-Gilroy Chamber members. Battle of the bands

GILROY – The Gilroy Youth Commission is looking for local bands to perform in an event on Saturday, Sept. 13, from noon to 8 p.m. at the Christmas Hill Park amphitheater. The event is free to the public. The commission is hoping to get at least eight local bands. Details: Myra Esparza at 846-0460.

Register for fall classes at Gav

GILROY – Gavilan College students who are at least 18 years of age may register for fall classes on the following dates.

• Gilroy main campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.: Register through Aug. 15, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

• Morgan Hill and Hollister: Register through Aug. 15, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:30 a .m. to noon, 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and Friday 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m.

Get your passport in Morgan Hill

MORGAN HILL – South Valley residents will no longer have to drive to San Jose or Hollister to submit passport applications. They can now take care of this at the Morgan Hill City Hall during most business hours.

The City Clerk’s Office has partnered with the Bureau of Consular Affair’s Passport Services and the United States Department of State to become a Passport Acceptance Agent. The Office currently accepts passport applications Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Each processed application will generate $30 to the city’s general fund. GILROY – The Friends of San Martin Animal Shelter (FOSMAS) need help finding loving families for more than 300 homeless companion animals currently at the Shelter and in foster homes. Come to the FOSMAS petfair on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 16 and 17, from noon to 5 p.m. held at Our Pet Shop, 705 First St. Adopt a pet, make a donation to cover spay/neuter, food and litter expenses or sign-up to volunteer for the shelter. Rock ‘n’ Roll Reunion

GILROY – Don’t miss “Rock ‘n’ Roll Reunion,” a singing and dancing tribute to the ’50s and ’60s. The show is a presentation of John Bisceglie and the City of Gilroy Community Services Department. The annual Children’s Summer Theater production will take place through Sunday, Aug. 23, at the Gilroy High School Theater, 750 W. 10th St.

Rock art at Chitactac

GILROY – The Bay Area Rock Art Research Association (BARARA) and the American Rock Art Research Association (ARARA) will sponsor a workshop at Chitactac-Adams Heritage County Park on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This will be an opportunity for teachers to learn to develop a classroom module utilizing the rock art and interpretive information at the park. Educational materials will be provided. Hands-on activities, and park tours will be available. The public, including families, are invited. There is no fee.
