GILROY – Registration is now open for the Gavilan College Concert Choir. The choir begins its fall semester, Tuesday, Aug. 19. The Gavilan College Concert Choir is under the direction of Phillip Robb. The choir meets every Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:45 p.m. at the Gilroy High School choir room. The choir is open to all singers, college-age and above. Reading music is helpful, but not required.

The choir just finished its 2002/2003 season. The 65 singers performed its concert of holiday music, including John Rutter’s “Gloria.” The concert was performed with the South Valley Symphony. The spring semester concert featured music of American composers past and present.

This fall semester the choir will be working on a variety of seasonal music for winter concerts. This will include the Vivaldi “Gloria” to be performed with the South Valley Symphony.

Singers who are interested may register at the Gavilan College Registrar’s Office or pick up materials on Aug. 19, the first night of class. For details, call Phillip Robb at

Orchestra odds and ends

GILROY – Rehearsals for musicians of the South Valley Symphony will commence on Wed-nesday, Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in room AL 101, located on the Gavilan College campus. Music Director and Conductor Henry Mollicone will be returning for his fourth season.

The orchestra is in need of violin, viola and cellists in the string section. There is also a need for at least two contrabass players for the volunteer orchestra.

There is also a need for bassoon, trombone and French horn players as well as a percussion player.

Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:45 p.m., and college credits will be given to those who attend the majority of rehearsals and perform in the concerts during the fall and spring semesters.

This year marks the 30th season of the continuous operation for the orchestra. The opening concert is set for Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Gavilan College theater. Concert starting times this season have been moved up one half-hour to 7:30 p.m.

Meet author Tim Sanders

GILROY – Tim Sanders will be at the Wize Owl bookstore on Friday, Aug. 15, at 7 p.m. for “Happy Hour.” Sanders is Chief Solutions Officer of YAHOO! and a best selling author. Saddle up to mounted rangers

GILROY – Meet the Mounted Ranger Unit with Coyote Lake Ranger Griggs on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 8 to 9 p.m. Learn what it takes to be a Ranger who rides horses. Participants will also get to roast marshmallows while listening to a spooky horse story. Meet at the visitor center. Round robin tourney

GILROY – Gilroy Assistance League (GAL) is inviting bridge players to participate in their Round Robin tournament. The Bridge Round Robin involves five games played monthly from October to March, excluding December. The cost is $25 and all funds benefit children in South County. Saving for long-term care

GILROY – Roberta Jones, an Edward Jones investment representative in Gilroy, will host a free program for individuals seeking to protect themselves from rising care costs. The event will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 5 p.m. at the Edward Jones office at 7877 Wren Ave., Suite A, in Gilroy. The office is located just South of First Street near the intersection of First Street and Wren Avenue.

During this one-hour event, Edward Jones experts will explore the benefits and limitations of Medicare and Medicaid as well as the differences between health and long-term care insurance. Wine and art festival
