GILROY – When parallel parking on a hill a driver is supposed to park with the vehicle’s wheels facing toward the curb or toward the street?

The correct answer is that the wheels should be facing the curb, but a surprising amount of California drivers don’t know the answer to that driving question or hundreds of others basic motor vehicle laws, and that’s why the state Department of Motor Vehicles is now offering an online tutor to help state drivers pass its driving test.

“Even though it takes some time to download, it should improve your ability to pass the test the first time (you take it),” said California DMV Director Steven Gourley in a release. “We expect the tutorial to be a very popular feature when customers find out about it.”

To obtain a California driver’s license, citizens are required to a pass one of several written tests containing a multitude of driving questions and state laws.

The tutorial, which debuted on April 8, provides a randomized series of 20 questions customers can bring up on a computer screen to test their knowledge of California driver laws. The program indicates instantly whether a correct answer has been selected, and the questions are designed to reflect real-life driving problems, according to the DMV.

Customers can get into the tutorial by going tot he state DMV Web site at www.dmv.ca.gov.
