Dear Editor:

For those South County Middle School basketball players who were not hand-picked to try out for the Gilroy Gators basketball team, but who would like to improve their skills during the off-season, below are some options:

1) The South County Basketball Academy in Morgan Hill has spring, summer, fall and winter leagues. Practices and games are at the Britton gym on Saturdays. Emphasis is on man-to-man defense; all team members play in rotation. Further information at www.scbabasketball.org.

2) The Gilroy High School coaches hold three excellent one-week clinics during the summer through the Gilroy Parks and Rec Department, for (current) 6th through 8th graders. A different player position is emphasized each week – point guard, shooting guard, or big man. I recommend all three for young players who have not yet reached their full potential. Contact the parks department.

3) The Live Oak High School coaches hold an excellent camp from June 16-20 for advanced players ages 12-17 at the Live Oak gym. Contact Norm Dow at 201-6125 or 847-2075.

Congratulations to all South County middle and high school players who worked hard to have winning seasons. Let’s continue to build winning traditions in Gilroy and Morgan Hill.
