DEAR EDITOR:

I am responding to a letter from T. J. McDonald, Morgan Hill submitted Tuesday, June 3 to the editor. Better late then never.

It may be that the Croy fire cost “law-abiding taxpayers $9 million dollars” but we, being victims of that fire paid to that as well. My husband and I and many of our neighbors ARE “law-abiding taxpayers.”

Whether we have paid taxes by working all of our lives or by county mandates, we have paid them and then some. What T. J. McDonald does not understand is that the county accepts our property tax money at $4,000-plus a year regardless of the permits. This is the same for many of the Croy Fire victims.

My husband and I tried to permit our home but the county said, “We do not permit in that area.” So the county lost a whole whopping $4,500, a one-time fee for a permit.

To the comment “It is outrageous that these free loaders …” I have a BA degree from Hayward University, and I “earn” my money by working a 9-to-5 job like anyone else.

My husband and I were born and raised in this valley. The outrage is that two honest, hard-working people who have spent their lives working, paying taxes, etc. can’t afford to live in the area in which they were born and raised. Where were you and the other cynical observers born Mr. McDonald?

Maybe you should leave so that we could afford to live in the flatlands. And, to the comment “Those of us who abide by the law deserve to be protected from the likes of these,” I say, don’t tell me about law-abiding citizens. I know that many “flatlanders” in Morgan Hill have non-permitted structures. This is not exclusive to those who chose to live a life in “God’s” country.” It is all around you so do not be so quick to accuse and claim that you are above us.

I personally would love to meet you in person to challenge my worth to yours.
