GILROY – Gilroy residents haven’t always associated the word “safe” with San Ysidro Park.
“(San Ysidro) used to be a park where families did not feel safe to go to,” Gilroy Police Community Service Officer Rachel Muñoz said.
On Saturday, however, Gilroy families will celebrate the fifth annual “Safe Night: Carnival in the Park” at San Ysidro, a tribute to the city reclaiming its public recreation property from those who practice violent and criminal behavior.
There’s no admission charge for the event, which will last from 4 to 7 p.m.
For the kids, there will be face painting, clowns, balloons, “mad science,” arts and crafts, a rock-climbing wall, a petting zoo, bounce houses and other activities. For those of all ages, entertainment will include Aztec dancers, ballet folklorico and a local Elvis impersonator.
Closer to the event’s theme, state Assemblyman Simòn Salinas will discuss legislative issues regarding families, including free fingerprinting for children, and Mayor Tom Springer will lead a peace pledge.
On top of everything, there will be free food, courtesy of the Wienerschnitzel fast-food hot-dog chain.
“The event is geared toward getting families to interact with each other,” Muñoz said. “It’s also an opportunity for families to come out and interact with public safety officials, government officials.”
San Ysidro Park is at Chestnut Street and Murray Avenue.
