Local girls kickers score three in shutout over Magic
CUPERTINO – Saturday afternoon, the De Anza Flash beat the Los Gatos Magic 3-0 in their home opener at Jollyman Park in Cupertino.
After a sluggish first half marked by accurate passing, weak tackling and little change of pace, the Flash picked it up and sparked a clever goal. Maurya Campeau cleared a ball up the left side to Kendra Sato who drove to the end line and hit a low firm cross to the feet of Brittany Barnes. While running past the goal, Brit flicked the ball past the Magic goalie to the far post.
Soon after that, Alison Wan found herself in position to smack a Magic back’s half-save. Ali hit it first-time from 10 yards out, across the goal to the bottom left corner.
Ten minutes later, Jessica Seifert sent a ball down the left touch line to Sarah Whitling. Sarah split two defenders from her wing half position and sent another low ball to Barnes who lofted it to the upper right corner.
Late in the game, Melanie Regan made two great saves to preserve the shutout. The Flash had only 1 sub and were starting to tire. The Magic started playing directly with long balls up the center of the field to their fast center forward. Mel had to stretch full-length to her left to snag one shot. Then the Magic came back with a high cross. No problem for Regan.
The next Flash game is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13 at noonn at Jollyman Park in Cupertino. All our players live in Morgan Hill, Gilroy and San Martin. If you are an experienced player looking for a U16, Class 3 girls team, email coach Ballan Campeau at ba********@*ol.com for tryout information.
