Kishimura’s 58 gives victory to Lady Mustangs in T-CAL

GILROY – When the team scores were tabulated at the end of Wednesday’s opening league tournament at Gilroy Golf Course, the Lady Mustangs were all tied up with Salinas – forcing a fifth player’s score to be added.

For the Gilroy golfers, it was junior Amy Kishimura – whose 58 total gave her team the victory to open the season with the T-CAL tournament action continuing today at Ridgemark Golf Course in Hollister.

“Amy’s consistent play paid off, because her score was the one that broke the tie,” head coach Eric Kuwada said.

The top two Lady Mustang finishers were sophomore Kristen Campos – who shot a team-low 48 – and junior Carissa Filice – who scored a 51 on opening day.

“Kristen and Carissa played well,” Kuwada said. “The girls played well today… I hope we can play well away from GIlroy GC and tomorrow’s match at Ridgemark GC will be a test.”

Seniors Andrea Hugo and Brittney Weber both tallied 56s to round out the Lady Mustangs’ top four scores – which are counted in the team results. Kishimura’s 58 followed in fifth (and ended up being the clincher), while senior Heather Peterson finished strong with a 66.

“The team is different in that they are working on improving and analyzing parts of their game. They want to play well and score low,” Kuwada said. “We have worked on individual problems and their scoring has come down.”

The final team results had Gilroy atop at 211 with Salinas in second by tiebreaker; Hollister in third with a 220; and Live Oak in fourth with a 249. Alvarez did not show up for the tournament.

“I also believe that since they played well last year and missed going to the CCS by a few strokes they are a little hungry. Andrea missed CCS by one stroke and Carissa by five strokes,” Kuwada said. “So Carissa and the others have worked on their games this summer. Eagle Ridge GC hosted a girls clinic during the summer and many of the girls were there to work on their game.

“This fire is raising the team expectations and motivating them to be better,” the coach added. “We hope to play all season and we will see how things shake out.”
