GILROY – Residents are invited to attend public forums to learn about and discuss a possible bond measure to improve and expand Gavilan College facilities. Three forums are planned, one each in Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister. A member of the Board of Trustees will chair each meeting, assisted by Gavilan College President Steve Kinsella. The forums will include a brief presentation, followed by a question-and-answer period and informal discussion. Each forum will include an introduction of the bond measure, project list and description of projects, the need to request local funding and financial information about the proposed bond. Meetings are as follows:
• Gilroy: today at 7 p.m. at the Student Center north/south lounge, Gilroy Campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.
• Hollister: Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at City Council Chambers, 375 Fifth St., Hollister.
• Morgan Hill: Tuesday, Oct. 14, 7 p.m. (This will take place during the “public comments” section of the regularly scheduled board meeting.) at the Morgan Hill Unified School District Offices.
The purpose of the forums is to give the public an opportunity to learn more about Gavilan College, including facilities needs, and plans for the future, and to share their ideas and opinions with college officials. Details: 847-1400.
Open house on SR 152/156
HOLLISTER – Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority and the California Department of Transportation will hold a public open house/scoping meeting for the environmental impact report for the proposed state route 152/156 project in south Santa Clara County.
The proposed project would provide safety and operational improvements through the following:
• widen portions of SR 152 and SR 156 from two lanes to four lanes within the project limits,
• construct a single-lane, grade-separated ramp for vehicles traveling eastbound on SR 152 through the project area,
• construct a single-lane, at-grade diagonal ramp for vehicles traveling westbound on SR 152 through project area,
• construct a single-lane, at-grade connector for vehicles traveling eastbound on SR 152 to westbound SR 156.
The purpose of the meeting is to provide the public with information about the project and receive comments on the environmental impact and mitigation measures that should be discussed in the Environmental Document.
The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Casa de Fruta, Gate 5, Pacheco Hall, 10031 Pacheco Pass Highway, Hollister.

Tenth year for ‘High on Health’
GILROY – Gavilan College Student Health Services and the Associated Student Body present their annual health fair, “High on Health” on Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center, Gilroy campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.
Now in its 10th year, this health fair will feature free health services and health education for the community. Services will include free and confidential HIV testing, free blood pressure and glucose screenings, and massage. Agencies attending will provide information on a wide range of health-related issues, from fitness and nutrition, to substance abuse and smoking, to mental health.
This event is free and open to the public. An all-day parking pass costs 75 cents. Details: 848-4791.
Church Animal Celebration
GILROY – St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 651 Broadway, will have a Blessing of the Animals Service on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m., in the Church Courtyard. This is the day of celebration of the ministry of St. Franci of Assisi. All members of the community are invited to come and bring their pets. Special prizes will be awarded for various categories of animals, followed by a free hot dog lunch with goodies. Details:

Apply for Rotary grants
GILROY – The Rotary Club of Gilroy is currently accepting applications for community grants. The Club has allocated approximately $20,000 to grant to local community agencies this year.
Grant applicants should:
• emphasize education and/or youth, with local focus in Gilroy,
• be an organization, not a person,
• have a broad-based impact, and a specific use for the money needs to be designated.
The Rotary Club of Gilroy has distributed more than $110,000 in community grants over the past six years. Applications can be obtained from the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, 7471 Monterey Road, or by calling Scott van Keulen at
