The Gilroy High boys soccer team paired together two goals in the final fives minutes to eke out a 3-2 decision over Sequoia in Homestead Christmas Cup action Saturday.
The Cherokees protected a 2-1 advantage for much of the second half before a late-game onslaught, which has become a trademark of the Mustangs early in the season, negated the deficit and ultimately led to the win.
“It was a great come-from-behind effort from the guys,” GHS head coach Armando Padilla said.
The Mustangs tied matters off of a set piece with Kristian Urias delivering the ball into the area and connecting with Jorge Sanchez for the equalizer.
“Sequoia kind of got on their heels and didn’t know what to do. We were just peppering their goal,” Padilla said.
The rush materialized into the game winner with little time to spare as Urias again packaged a pass into the box off of a set piece, this time Jonathan Diaz De Leon got his head on it to place the ball in the net.
GHS (3-2-2) will host Christopher High is a crosstown matchup tonight to close Christmas Cup play.
Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
