Gilroy gets win one out of the way.
Senior Cameron Yawary paced the Gilroy High boys varsity basketball team with a game-high 19 points and the Mustangs downed Abbottsford 70-42 as part of the annual Aptos Invitational on Thursday night.
“We wore them down at the end,” first-year head coach Matt Tait said, who notches win No. 1 with the blue and white. “we were cold to start out and missed a lot of shots. It’s still a learning processs.”
The Mustangs built a 21-10 first-quarter lead, slowing a bit with only eight points in the second quarter to take a 31-20 lead into the locker room. However, a big third quarter gave the Mustangs a 21-point cushion, heading into the final period.
Ryan Valentino-Pickett and Chima Ikeme each deposited nine points and Niko Fortino pocketed eight in the victory. Ikeme ended up one point shy of a double-double, pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds. And Robby Filice factored in on the boards off the bench grabbing nine rebounds.
“There were some nice surprises and the kids stepped up and played well,” Tait said.
The Mustangs (1-0) continue play at the Aptos Invite tonight against Gunn at Aptos High. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
