Go mustangs!

Robledo, Gonzalez named to Mount Hamilton Second-team
No surprise here: Gilroy High’s Dani Hemeon was named the Central Coast Section’s co-Most Valuable Player for the 2010 field hockey season.

Even with all the other highly talented products to come out of the GHS system in the last decade, perhaps no other Gilroy High field hockey player has had the individual impact Hemeon delivered over the past two seasons for one of the most successful programs in the section. Debatable, yes, but what isn’t easily argued is the important role Hemeon had during this season’s run to the CCS finals. Hemeon, who is headed to the University of Iowa next fall, also garnered Mount Hamilton Division First-Team status, along with senior teammates Katelyn Nebesnick, Tayler Schaut and Emily Costa.

Nebesnick served as one of three captains in 2010 and never failed to demonstrate a reckless abandon, which made her so useful at the forward position. Costa also served as a team captain, and with a quiet leadership helped facilitate smooth transition passes up field.

Schaut anchored a defensive unit that held its own against some of the more potent offenses in the section. Schaut made a habit of disrupting an offensive opportunity an opponent may have created and calmly cleared the ball out of danger.

Also taking home some hardware were seniors Jessica Gonzalez and Shayna Robledo who made the Second-Team list.

Gonzalez, in her first year at the varsity level, acclimated into the goalie position with ease and managed to put together a solid season in net. She was always good for an in-your-face postgame pep talk, too.

Robledo had a huge second half of the season, contributing to the Mustangs’ always-persistent offensive push.

But what made the 2010 Mustangs a unique bunch was the team chemistry and all-for-one, one-for-all attitude. Every player contributed. And in a the most proper way possible, the team held their annual banquet Sunday and handed out team awards based on the girls’ votes.
