Taylor Slattery and Alex Maldonado account for Mustangs’
goals.
Head coach Jose Hernandez appreciated the way his Gilroy High girls soccer team responded in the midst of a physical non-league contest with Palo Alto on Thursday.

“We aren’t backing down against physical play. That makes me feel good,” Hernandez wrote via text message.

The Mustangs (3-1-2) topped the Vikings 3-0 and in doing so aced another necessary challenge while building an eye-opening resume geared for postseason recognition.

Taylor Slattery tallied twice, giving her four goals on the year. Alex Maldonado buried the third goal, her second in as many games. Mariela Martinez and Indra Garcia were credited with assists. Sarina Sandoval had three saves.

The Vikings were forced to play a man down after a player was sent off early in the first half after receiving a direct red card. GHS grabbed a 1-0 lead and added two in the second half.

The Mustangs have scored eight goals in their last two outings after having just two in four games prior.
