Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors candidate Teresa Alvarado was joined by a group of Morgan Hill leaders to accept their support in her campaign bid.
Morgan Hill city councilmen, current and former mayors and community leaders stood behind Alvarado, a San Jose resident, as she accepted their support at a ceremony on Third Street Thursday.
“I have tremendous support here, and that’s why I am committed to representing Morgan Hill on the board of supervisors,” Alvarado said.
She is running for the District One, or South County seat on the board, which is currently occupied by Don Gage of Gilroy. Gage will be termed out at the end of 2010, and the list of candidates vying for his seat include Alvarado, former San Jose City Councilman Forrest Williams, Gilroy City Councilman Peter Arellano, and Los Gatos Mayor Mike Wasserman.
The primary election is scheduled for June 8, and the general election will occur Nov. 2. The qualifying deadline to run for the office is March 12.
Mayor Steve Tate said although Alvarado is not from South County, he is impressed with her knowledge of and passion for the issues faced by residents in the district.
“Teresa Alvarado has the ability to get things done,” Tate added.
City Councilman Larry Carr said he supports Alvarado because she understands the land use and other concerns that are unique to South County.
“I wanted to find a candidate who understood the uniqueness of South County, and I’m honored to support (Alvarado’s) candidacy,” Carr said.
Added City Councilman Greg Sellers, “It’s important that we have a candidate that knows how to get things done and pull people together.”
And former mayor Dennis Kennedy cited Alvarado’s education and background working with nonprofit organizations in Silicon Valley, including the South Valley Leadership Forum.
“I think she will represent South County very well,” Kennedy said.
