GILROY – Mountain View goalie Sarah Bennet picked up her 15th shutout of the season as the No. 5-seeded Spartans ended the Gilroy High girls’ soccer season with a 2-0 victory in the quarterfinals of the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex on Saturday morning.

The No. 4-seeded Mustangs (14-5-2) fell behind 2-0 in the first half on Spartans’ goals by Victoria Hayward and Emily Andrew and couldn’t manage find the net in the second half.

The Spartans’ (18-3-2) defense, which has allowed just 12 goals in 23 games this season, disrupted the Mustangs’ normally fluid offensive attack. Gilroy had averaged 5.1 goals per game in its previous 12 contests.

Gilroy had its best opportunities midway through the first half. Minutes after Hayward scored in the 13th minute to put the Spartans up 1-0, GHS junior co-captain Katelyn Nebesnick, who was everywhere for the Mustangs on Saturday, ripped a low-lying shot just wide of the cage. A minute later, off of a corner kick, sophomore Savannah Silacci missed high from point-blank range.

“We weren’t able to finish,” GHS head coach Jose Hernandez said. “Today we had a few opportunities. We didn’t finish them and that ended that. (Mountain View) is a very, very good team.”
