Rosemary Kamei, a Director of the Santa Clara Valley Water District since 1993, today announced she is ending her nearly year-long campaign for the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors.

“I am extremely grateful for the support my campaign has received over the last 10 months,” Kamei said. “This campaign brought together diverse communities with different interests and agendas. I am proud of the dialogue we started. However, as I assessed the race, and with input from my family and closest friends, I’ve concluded this isn’t the right race for me at this time.

“Public service is extremely important to me. While I may not be a supervisor, it will not stop me from giving back to the community and doing my part in improving our neighborhoods and our region,” she added.

Steve Preminger, chairman of the Santa Clara County Democratic Party, praised Kamei’s decision.

“One thing’s for sure – we haven’t seen the last of Rosemary Kamei,” he said. “Rosemary has built an amazing track record of standing up for her core values of our party – fiscal responsibility, environmental stewardship, a woman’s right to choose, health care access and the rights of working families. She would have been a fantastic member of the Board of Supervisors and we look forward to supporting her future community or political endeavors.”

After deciding to end her campaign, Kamei immediately endorsed former San Jose City Council member Forrest Williams for the Board of Supervisors.

“I found Forrest to be an honest and straightforward competitor for this seat and someone that I would be proud to support,” Kamei said. “His experience creating jobs as an elected official will be crucial to the future of our district and his experience with large budgets and community services is simply unmatched by his opponents. I look forward to working with Forrest and his supporters to win this seat and preserve the values and quality of life we all hold dear.”

The seat will be vacant because current Supervisor Don Gage has termed out. He is running for Kamei’s water district seat.
