GILROY – Following a win last week against Pajaro Valley, the Christopher High varsity wrestling team nearly made it two in a row to close out their first season in the Monterey Bay League.
An experienced North Monterey County team spoiled the party in a well-fought dual meet Tuesday in Gilroy.
“North Monterey County brought very experienced and well-rounded wrestlers with a majority of their lineup being seniors,” Cougars head coach Alecxis Lara said. “But still our boys kept their matches close and wrestled and battled tough, representing themselves well.”
Though NMC defeated CHS 40-22, the Cougars (3-3) carry some confidence heading into Friday’s MBL tournament.
Three Cougars, Tomas Zamora, John Riffle and Tyler Decarlo all had control of their matches, Lara said, before some poor officiating and late-match mistakes cost the team some points.
“Some of (the matches) were close, but then we got pinned at the end,” Lara said. “The ref was really bad. He literally asked me if I had a rule book with me.”
