Talking the good talk

Gilroy High School student Angeline Kimbo won the Gilroy Lions Club Student Speaker contest Feb. 9. She received a $75 cash prize and will advance to the Lions Zone Speech Contest, where she will compete against the winners of the Hollister, San Martin and Morgan Hill Lions clubs’ speech competitions. Gilroy High students Rachel Smith and Brandon George were runners-up and won $25 cash prizes.

This year, the Lions of California will award a total of $103,500 in college scholarships to California high school students. All students spoke on the subject, “Universal Healthcare – How Will It Affect Us?”

In addition to cash prizes for winning students at club, zone and regional levels, 15 district-level winners will each receive a $4,500 college scholarship, three area-level winners will each receive an $11,000 scholarship and one multiple district-level winner will receive a scholarship of $20,500.

Hoopin’ it up

The Knights of Columbus held a free throw contest at the South Valley Middle School gym Feb. 13. Erin Mank won the girls, age 10-11 division; Jordan Evanger won the girls, age 12-14 division, in which Madison Muro took second place; Max Kent won the boys, age 10-11 division, in which Cianfranco Filice took second place; and Anthony Sammut won the boys, age 12-14 division.

First-place winners move on to the district and regional competition Feb. 20 a the Most Holy Trinity School, 2040 Nassau Drive, San Jose. Winners there will advance to the state finals March 20 in Fresno.

The Knights of Columbus had 30 million entries nationwide in the 2009 contest.
