A known gang member and parolee was stabbed by multiple men in a north Gilroy gang attack, police said.

Just before 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, the 20-year-old man was walking alone on the 8100 block of Murray Avenue when the attack occurred, police said. After the attack, police received a call from the man saying that he had been stabbed, police said. Police responded to Grant Court to find him lying in the road.

Police recognized the man as a gang member and a parolee from “prior professional contacts,” police said. Sgt. Wes Stanford would not say to which gang the man belonged, but that the attack appeared to have taken place between members of two different gangs. The man, whose name and age police did not release, said he had been attacked by multiple Hispanic males who were in their late teens or early 20s and who fled in an unknown type of vehicle. Police did not specify the number of assailants.

Although police did not find the weapon used in the attack, “it appears to be a knife,” Stanford said.

The man was taken to a local emergency room, and he is expected to recover from his injuries, police said.

The man was specifically targeted and the attack was gang-related, police said. However, they did not say what evidence demonstrated those conclusions.

“We want the public to be aware that this happened but we don’t want to make it sound like there’s a roving band of guys going around stabbing people,” Stanford said.

Anyone with information on this crime can call police at 846-0350 or leave an anonymous tip at (800) 782-7463.
