A Gilroy man who is accused of stealing a police cruiser and provoking police into shooting at him in defense will not make a plea until March 30.
Kenneth Michael Aguero, 31, allegedly stole a police cruiser and tried to steal police guns on Jan. 24 after causing a disturbance at Marx Towing, 5757 Obata Way, in southeast Gilroy. Police unsuccessfully tried to detain him with pepper spray, shots from electronic stun guns, and police baton hits, but were unsuccessful, police said. In addition, a Gilroy police sergeant and officer fired their guns at the police car Aguero stole, police said. Police finally arrested him with the help of a police dog.
Aguero faces felony charges of attempted theft or unauthorized use of a vehicle, theft or unauthorized use of a police or fire vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting or deterring arrest and interfering with an animal used by police. He was in court Thursday for a plea hearing, but the judge continued it until March 30.
