After 66 years of business, the owners of the downtown business Maddux Jewelry announced earlier this week they are closing its doors.
The jewelry retailer is one of many business lost in downtown Hollister during the past year. Last month, 17-year-old Elegant Touch closed just a block away. Other businesses that have closed in the area include Las Palmas Restaurant, French’s Kitchen and Bath, Monte Carlo, Pancho’s Restaurant and San Benito Pasta.
Maddux Jewelry owner Rick Maddux admitted it was a tough decision to close, but it was necessary because of the economy and it was “just time.” The store plans to stay open through the holidays.
“It’s a want business, not a need business,” said Maddux, 66, who runs the business with his wife Linda Maddux, 70. “A lot of people just don’t have the money to repair jewelry or buy it.”
The business, which has bounced between multiple locations downtown, started in 1941 as a watch repair shop in Hollister. In 1944, the business was purchased by Maddux’s father Melvin Maddux, who changed its name to Maddux Jewelry.
In 1987, Maddux purchased the business from his father, focusing on fine jewelry and repairs.
