Please drop off a turkey, canned food, diapers or a monetary donation prior to Thanksgiving. It’s a great way to say thanks and give a boost to this community. JEERS for the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters office. More ballots get mailed in earlier and earlier and the results get tallied later and later. There has to be a creative solution that complements the drama of Election Night. Sure, San Francisco Giants fans waited 56 years for a World Series Championship, but county voters shouldn’t have to wait for days to get an almost-final tally.
JEERS for the new draconian Santa Clara County tobacco ordinance. Fortunately, at this point, private businesses like Coyote Valley Sporting Clays, don’t have to adhere to an absolutely no smoking standard. At county parks, though, smoking is off limits. It’s an over-the-top law that is silly in terms of enforcement. Is that really what we want park rangers to do – cite people for smoking around a campfire?
CHEERS for Don Gage’s huge victory in the race for a Santa Clara Valley Water District seat. There’s a new sheriff in town and at the water district there’s a lot of cleaning up to do. Gage will leave the Board of Supervisors early to take over his water district seat. Last day on the Board of Supervisors will be Thursday, Dec. 2. First day on the water district board, Dec. 3. Expect the news to be flowing.
CHEERS for the grand opening of Mi Pueblo market last weekend. The place was hopping and customers were happy. That’s what business is all about and the dust-up over the color scheme was solved with a little give-and-take and communication. Welcome to Gilroy Mi Pueblo.
CHEERS for the inaugural football battle between the Gilroy High School Mustangs and the Christopher High School Cougars. The contest will be a spirited one and hopefully the coaches will emphasize how to win – or lose – with class. Thus far, the rivalry between the two schools has been handled extremely well.
CHEERS for the methodical progress being made by Sharon Waller, Karen Humber and Kristyn Corley on the proposal for the Gilroy Prep Charter School. Education desperately needs innovative and committed champions for students. The charter school supporters represent that passion for educating students. The Gilroy School Board should creatively figure out how to resolve any remaining budget issues and let the new team get busy making the prep school come alive.
