Erin Kinkel Scholarship fundraiser
• Gilroy – The Kinkel family and the Erin Kinkel Memorial Scholarship Award Committee are hosting a fundraiser and “safety day” at Maui Tacos Saturday to benefit the scholarship fund for South County high school seniors.
Fifteen percent of all sales made between 11am and 6pm at the 890 Renz Lane restaurant in Pacheco Pass Center will benefit the scholarship fund.
Prizes – including a six-night stay in a condo on Maui donated by Maui Tacos, as well as Jamba Juice and It’s a Grind packages – will be raffled off and a Hawaiian band will provide music for hula dancers between 1 and 3pm. “Mustang” blue wristbands reading “Drive Responsibly” in memory of Kinkel will be sold for $2, as well.
Driving safety is also a theme for the afternoon, and the California Highway Patrol will be conducting carseat checks, while the California Department of Forestry will give safety presentations. Morgan Hill West Coast Karate’s demonstration team will perform.
Scott and Miki Kinkel launched the scholarship this spring in memory of their daughter, Erin, who was killed last Aug. 1 in a car crash while riding unrestrained in the bed of a pick-up truck. The scholarships will be awarded to students planning to attend college who have made a positive impact on people’s lives and who make responsible choices.
Two Gav students win scholarship
• Gilroy – The Unitarian Church in Gilroy has awarded two Huldah Champion Florence Nightengale scholarships to first–year nursing students at Gavilan College.
Margaret Huckabay and Bret Alan Barker were both granted $500 scholarships to continue their nursing education.
Huldah Champion is the wife of a former Gavilan dean who was active with both the staff and students on the campus. She has cancer, and the scholarships were established last year in her name.
“We were looking for ways to do good on a small budget,” said George Nale, secretary–treasurer for the church.
Huckabay and Barker are both students attending Gavilan a little later in their lives and show a lot of promise in the nursing profession, Nale said.
Details: Nale at 779–4275.
