Alien to provide tags for bags in Lisbon

Alien Technology, an industry leader in radio frequency identification products and services, and their Denmark channel partner, Lyngsoe Systems, announced the third in a series of airport baggage handling wins. Teaming with Lyngsoe Systems, Alien will provide millions of their field-proven Higgs-3 based UHF Squiggle inlays for Lisbon’s Transfer Baggage Terminal. The small footprint and ultra high performance of the Alien Squiggle inlay have made it a frequent flyer for numerous baggage tagging installations around the world.

Explains Jan Poulsen, Sales Director for Lyngsoe Systems, “Lisbon Airport is the only airport in the world solely using UHF RFID tags to handle transfer baggage and the results are very impressive — a 99+% read rate accuracy level has been achieved. The project started in December 2008 when Lisbon Airport opened their new transfer baggage terminal using our Baggage Enabling System (BHS) in addition to Alien’s high performing Higgs-3 UHF inlays. Limited baggage handling capacity was the key driver prompting the Lisbon Airport to re-design their baggage handling system to service increasing numbers of travelers. An RFID-based baggage tracking solution was ultimately selected to completely automate the baggage handling process, and to reduce baggage handling errors by improving the read rates and efficiency of the luggage tracking system throughout the BHS. Each piece of luggage in the TBT is affixed with a luggage tag incorporating an Alien inlay.”

Adds Stephen Crocker, Director EMEA/India for Alien Technology, “This is our third airport luggage tracking installation with Lyngsoe Systems in Europe involving millions of tags per annum, and we are rapidly becoming the preferred RFID vendor for luggage tracking applications throughout EMEA. Working closely with Lyngsoe Systems, we recommended our field-proven ALN-9640 Higgs-3 Squiggle inlay for its exceptional read performance and high reliability. The Alien inlays have been working flawlessly from the on-set, and emerged as the winner amongst competitive options plagued with inconsistent reads and adhesive bonding issues.”

Notes Mr. Sergio Miranda from the Lisbon Airport, “Lyngsoe provided us with a complete RFID-based solution for our TBT and we had great faith in Lyngsoe specifying the Best-in-Class hardware for the entire project. We are very pleased with the performance of the Lyngsoe/Alien solution.”

Jan Poulsen concludes, “As well as handling the project management of this application, we provided the complete RFID system solution for the Lisbon Airport, and we were very pleased to work once again with the Alien team in providing the best UHF tagging solution for this high-profile installation. We foresee strong growth in the years ahead for RFID solutions in the luggage tracking arena and have already forged ourselves into a leadership position for airport applications. It was a privilege to be involved with the Lisbon Airport Team on this installation and we look forward in supporting them on their future projects.”
