The Lady Mustangs and Lady Balers square off Thursday to decide
who will share the Tri-County Athletic League title with Notre
Dame.
Though the Lady Mustangs were physically on the field facing North Salinas on Tuesday, they couldn’t help but wonder what was going down between Notre Dame and San Benito.

And who can blame them?

“They were probably thinking more about tomorrow’s game than they were about yesterday’s, unfortunately,” GHS manager Julie Berggren said.

Despite wandering thoughts, the Gilroy High softball team took care of the task at hand, defeating the Lady Vikings, 6-2, and learned shortly after that a share of the Tri-County Athletic League title is at their fingertips, thanks to a 2-0 Spirits’ victory over san Benito.

“I’m very thankful to Notre Dame,” Berggren said.

Going into Tuesday’s TCAL action, the Spirits (22-4, 10-2 TCAL), the Lady Balers (20-4, 9-2) and the Lady Mustangs (14-6, 9-2), were jockeying for position atop the standings. All three teams were within a game of the top spot. San Benito held first place going into the day.

With the Spirits win over San Benito on Tuesday (the Spirits are responsible for both of the Balers’ losses in league this season) they earned a share of the TCAL crown.

Who they will share it with comes down to a grudge match between the Lady Balers and Lady Mustangs on Thursday in Gilroy.

“They are excited, they are ready and they can’t wait to play,” Berggren said. “To play Hollister anytime is a huge thing and to have it mean a little more this time makes it even more special.”

San Benito narrowly defeated GHS 1-0 in eight innings in the teams’ first encounter April 23.

Game time for Thursday’s showdown is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start.
