CARMEL – Wesley Theigles qualified for his first CCS
Championships and the GHS boys golf team capped a solid season with
a fourth-place showing at the league championships Monday.
CARMEL – Wesley Theigles picked a good day to find the zone out on the golf course.
The Gilroy High senior carded an 82 on the par-71 Quail Lodge Resort and Golf Course at the Tri-County Athletic League Championships on Monday afternoon in Carmel, claiming his spot in the Central Coast Section Regional Championships next week.
“He never really put himself in trouble,” GHS head coach Jared Gamble said. “He made a lot of putts. I saw a lot of fist pumps on the greens.”
Capping a memorable day, Theigles learned that he earned second-team all-league recognition as well. His appearance in the CCS Championships will be his first.
The field had to contend with some windy conditions, Gamble said, as well as a full18-hole round, as opposed to the normal nine-hole league tournaments.
As a team, the Mustangs totalled a 448 to finish fourth.
“They weren’t bummed, but they would have liked third,” Gamble said.
In placing fourth at the championships, GHS ends the year also in fourth in the final league standings.
Palma took the team title with a 390 followed by San Benito with a 406. As a result, both teams earned bids to the CCS Championships at Rancho Canada next Monday and Tuesday.
Mitch Goldsmith posted the team’s second-lowest score with his 86, and Chris Martinez joined both Theigles and Goldsmith in the 80s with an 89. Alex Siao, who was voted by the other players in the league as one of the recipients of the Sportsmanship Award, shot a 91, and Tommy Cox and Corey Gowan each shot 100.
Team totals:
Palma – 390
San Benito – 406
Alvarez – 437
Gilroy – 448
Salinas – 451
North Salinas – 533
Alisal – 537
