Students at Ascencion Solorsano Middle School placed first in the nation on a test of wits when it comes to Internet safety.
Enough federal agents showed up on campus Thursday afternoon to field a basketball team, joked Daryl Hulce, director of the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. His organization, in concert with the FBI, developed the FBI-Safe Online Surfing Internet Challenge, a free, educational online program that teaches elementary and middle school students how to recognize and react to online dangers.
This year, Solorsano students in teacher Judy McLeod’s computer class took the online quizzes and scored the highest in the country. Five students – Jaclyn Boyd, Mckenna Morley, Breanna Atencio, Maribel Barrera and Brian Kachakji – received certificates from the FBI. The FBI also presented Principal Sal Tomasello with a trophy commemorating Solorsano’s success and the school’s name will be engraved on a plaque hanging in the local FBI office.
“This month, you are the shining example in this country and your efforts are nothing short of amazing,” Special Agent Nick Savage told the students.
