His voice breaking with emotion, school board trustee Javier Aguirre announced his decision to step down because he is moving to San Jose.

He will submit a letter of resignation today.

Married with two young children, Aguirre’s plans to move his family to San Jose to be closer to his and his wife’s jobs and his wife’s family will cut his term about seven months short.

Aguirre was appointed to the Gilroy Unified School District Board of Education in December 2005 to serve the remainder of the late T.J. Owens’ term. Voters re-elected Aguirre to the school board in November 2006 to serve a four-year term.

Born and raised in Gilroy, Aguirre attended Gilroy public schools before earning his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and his Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School. He is currently employed by the County of Santa Clara.

His fellow colleagues spent several minutes at Thursday evening’s board meeting sharing kind words and memories about Aguirre.

“When Javier was first appointed, we had a vote and I didn’t vote for you,” trustee Rhoda Bress said with a laugh. “But I’m so glad you ended up being that person on the board.”

Aguirre served for one year as vice president when Bress was president and then as president himself. He did it with “grace and style,” Bress said.

“You’re going to leave a huge hole on this board,” trustee Tom Bundros said.

Trustees plan to discuss the process for filling Aguirre’s position at an April 22 school board meeting.
