For the fourth time in seven matches this season, the Christopher High girls varsity volleyball team wound up on the losing end of a five-set match.

Despite jumping out to a two-sets-to-none lead, the Cougars dropped the next three to host Monte Vista Christian (25-15, 25-14, 20-25, 15-25, 11-15) in the teams’ Monterey Bay League opener Tuesday night.

In the Cougars’ four five-set losses this season, they have taken a 2-0 lead twice and seen the advantage evaporate in both.

“We walked over them pretty easily in the first two sets,” said head coach Larry Nabzeska, who took over full coaching responsibilities last week after former head coach Sam Navarez stepped away for personal reasons.

“(MVC) made some adjustments,” he added.

Paulina Vo-Griffin converted 30-of-33 serves for points, including a stretch of 10 straight points in the first set. Vo-Griffin finished the night with eight aces.

Nabzeska said the Cougars had issues defending against MVC’s (5-2 overall, 1-0 MBL) top hitter.

“If we could have blocked her there is no doubt in my mind we would have won,” he said. “We have to be able to block.”

Junior Merrett Brown recorded a team-high 14 kills and freshman Hanna Tabron posted eight.

“My middles did the best for us,” Nabzeska said. “They did really well.”

Junior Claudia Ferreira had 28 digs while freshman Michele Toves picked up 18 of her own. Setter Alexandra Gerberik put up 20 assists.

The Cougars (2-5 overall, 0-1 MBL) resume MBL action facing Monterey on Thursday at CHS. The Toreadors are 3-11 entering their first league match of the season.

Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
