Red Phone: Low branches need to be cut

“Could you let us know why the prices for admission to football games at GHS and CHS are different? A GHS student with ID attending a GHS game pays $1 while a CHS student with ID attending a CHS game pays $2. A visiting student with ID attending a GHS game pays $3 while a visiting student with ID attending a CHS game pays $4. It’s bad enough that there is a parking fee and parents pay $7 to watch their own kids play. But come on now.”

Red Phone: Dear Ticket Master, It appears the reason for the different price is because the schools are in two different leagues and use the standard fees set up by those leagues. When Christopher High opened, it joined the Monterey Bay League, while Gilroy remained in the Tri-County Athletic League.

“The TCAL Board of Managers sets a maximum for contests and all schools have agreed to use those figures to avoid confusion,” said GHS Athletic Director Jack Daley.

Christopher High generally tries to mirror the example set up by Gilroy High although there may be some small differences, CHS Athletic Director Darren Yafai said.

Gilroy did raise its yearly ASB fee for the first time in about 10 years to $40, while CHS remained at $30. Of that $40, ASB gets $15, athletics gets $20 and $5 goes into a operations fund, Daley said.

The ASB sticker price was available at last year’s price of $30 until the first day of school.

“ASB uses the money to fund school activities, dances, events etc.,” Daley said. “Athletics uses the funds to pay for end of the year awards for each athlete, blocks certificates numbers inserts etc. and to cover other expenses like officials. The operations account helps run the ASB office in terms of office supplies, software maintenance and purchase, credit card and web site charges. The $10 difference I think reflects the larger school and greater need at this point.”

The last increase was $25 to $30, he said.

Since the gate fees go to the home school to cover operating expenses such as lights, even the full price of $7 is a small price to pay. It’s still cheaper than going to see a movie. Nothing beats hanging out on a Friday night with friends rooting the Mustangs and Cougars to victory.

Speaking of which, Gilroy will play visiting Leland at 7:30 p.m. Friday, while Christopher will travel to face Capuchino at 1 p.m. Saturday.
