Bert Mar stands outside the South Valley Middle School gym where he coached wrestling for 27 years. The school will name the gym after the long-time coach later this summer.

GILROY—Gilroy Unified School District granted a deadline extension to raise funds for the Bert Mar Gymnasium Project, but it turns out it wasn’t needed.
The project team reached its goal of raising $3,000 for the Mar plaque 12 hours ahead of its original June 30 deadline.
“Hurray, thank you…to all our fantastic supporters. With the help of many donations at a fundraiser we have met our goal.” Jess Varela wrote on the project’s gofundme page.
GUSD unanimously approved the gym’s dedication at a May 7 board meeting.
Mar coached wrestling at South Valley for 27 years during which the Tigers went undefeated in dual meets. He groomed 111 section champions and 82 county champs during his tenure. He also coached flag football, track and field, soccer and served as athletic director at South Valley, too.
The date the plaque will be unveiled at the school is yet to be determined.
