GILROY—A Gilroy man was arrested on two counts of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing his elderly grandmother and aunt multiple times Monday night, according to a statement from the Gilroy Police Department.
Stephen Gause-Subia, 20, is in custody at Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion he stabbed the two women, ages 83 and 60. Police have not identified a motive in the double stabbing and have not identified the victims.
The victims remain hospitalized with injuries they received in the assault, GPD Sgt. Royce Heath said. The 83-year-old victim, identified as Gause-Subia’s grandmother, was in critical condition on Tuesday afternoon, while the 60-year-old, the suspect’s aunt, was in serious but stable condition, Heath said. Both women are Gilroy residents.
Police received a 911 call from the 8400 block of Wayland Lane about a disturbance just before 6:11 p.m. Monday that included the screams of a woman. Police officers arrived on scene and found two women there with “numerous” stab wounds to the face, head and limbs, according to Heath.
Both victims were rushed via helicopter to a San Jose hospital, where they received emergency surgery for serious injuries, he said.
Detectives worked the case late into the evening and quickly identified Gause-Subia as a suspect after a search of the surrounding area, Heath told the Dispatch.
Gause-Subia allegedly fled the scene before police arrived. Officers found him walking along Murray Avenue and took him into custody at 8:19 p.m. without incident, police said.
While an arrest was made within hours of the reported crime, Heath said the investigation is ongoing.
