Gilroy Mustangs

GILROY—The Christopher tennis team’s newer players got a chance to show off their skills Thursday against Pajaro Valley, and they rose to the occasion.
The Cougars won 6-1 at Pajaro Valley. They easily swept doubles play and breezed through singles with the only loss coming in the No. 1 match.
Sydney Tran, Christopher’s No.1 took the first set 6-2. Pajaro Valley rebounded with a 6-1 victory to force the tiebreaker and ultimately claimed the match in that set, 10-6.
Christopher’s No. 3 team featured some new faces, but won easily. Sabine Yoder-Schrock and Allison Ramirez, the No. 3s, won their match 6-2, 6-0. Camryn Crowley and Nikki Chen, the No. 2 team, also won 6-1, 6-1.
The No. 1 team of Toni Martinez and Samantha Ramirez quickly filed away their PV opponents, winning 6-0, 6-1.
Back in singles, No. 2 Niet Khay won 6-1, 6-0. Malia Campos, the No. 3, beat her PV counterpart 6-4, 6-0. Kelly Nantais, playing as the No. 4, won 6-4, 6-1.
Christopher (4-5) will host San Benito at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Vikings edge Gilroy
The Mustangs came up just short against North Salinas, falling 4-3 Thursday at home.
The No. 1 doubles team of Nicole Holder and Savanna Brandon celebrated Senior Day with a 6-4, 6-1 win to maintain their perfect 8-0 record. The duo showed no signs of tiredness despite performing in Gilroy’s first choir concert the night before.
Maggie Pickford and Mya Esquivel, the No. 2 team, also won. The duo bested their Vikings counterparts 6-2, 6-3 to improve to 7-1 this year.
Angela Martin, Gilroy’s No. 3, recorded the team’s lone singles win, beating North Salinas 6-2, 6-2.
No. 1 singles Brea Martin fell 6-2, 6-2, while Didi Bakita, the No. 2, lost 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 4 slot, Catherine Bell lost 6-1, 6-1.
Sofia Magana and Daniela Castillo, the No. 3 team, fell 6-0, 6-3 to their North Salinas opponents.
“(I’m) so proud of all our players, this outstanding varsity team and all our girl’s tennis team players,” Mustangs coach Ray Blagof said via email. “You are all very special. Thank you got being part of this team.”
The Mustangs (3-6) will be back on the court at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Monte Vista Christian.
VOLLEYBALL
Cougars top Watsonville, Anzar
Christopher snapped a three-game skid by recording wins over Watsonville and Anzar Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
The Cougars swept Watsonville 25-21, 25-15, 25-12 on Thursday at home.
Christopher went on to beat Anzar 3-1 in the Dig Pink Tournament Saturday at Gavilan College.
Stats were not yet available for either game.
Christopher (15-7 overall, 4-3 in league) will be back in action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Salinas.
Bulldogs blank Mustangs
Gilroy fell 3-0 to Sobrato Saturday at the Dig Pink Tournament at Gavilan College.
The Bulldogs won 25-10, 25-11, 25-16. Stats from this game were not yet available.
Gilroy (2-6 overall, 1-5 in league) will be back on the court at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Everett Alvarez.
BOYS WATER POLO
Cougars fall to Stevenson
Stevenson edged Christopher 15-14 Thursday at home.
Stats and scoring from this game were not yet available.
The Cougars will be back in action against Harbor at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
GIRLS WATER POLO
Soquel cruises by Cougars
Soquel topped Christopher 16-2 Thursday at Cabrillo College.
The Cougars scored a goal in the third and fourth quarters, but couldn’t erase the 12-0 hole they found themselves in at halftime.
Stats were not yet available.
Christopher (5-10 overall, 1-8 in league) will be back in action at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Santa Catalina.
FIELD HOCKEY
Mustangs fall to Cowboys
North Salinas handed Gilroy a 4-0 loss Thursday at home.
Kelly Nebesenick was named the Mustangs Player of the Game.
Gilroy (10-3-2 overall, 5-1 in league) hosts Notre Dame-Salinas at 4 p.m. today.
